Corporate Signage for Springer Nature: Transforming a Brand Identity in London

When global publishing brand Springer Nature was formed in May 2015, the company sought to create an inspiring new workplace that would reflect its bold brand vision. As a result of the merger between Springer Science+Business Media and the majority of Macmillan Science and Education, the newly established company needed an environment that would stimulate creativity and support its future as a leader in scientific, educational, professional, and scholarly publishing.

For this transformative project, Springer Nature required a complete corporate signage solution for its London offices – and turned to Signbox to deliver. The collaboration was led by fit-out contractor ISG Interiors, who recommended long-term signage partner Signbox to join forces with the project architect Broadway Malyan and Springer Nature’s in-house design team. Together, they developed a comprehensive brief focused on branding, navigation and visual engagement.

Signbox’s brief was to deliver high-quality corporate signage for Springer Nature across three office buildings as part of a four-phase fit-out. The resulting solution integrated wayfinding, directory systems, statutory signage, display graphics and creative glass manifestations – all carefully aligned with the client’s brand guidelines and visual identity.

Delivering Corporate Signage with Creativity and Clarity

Signbox designed and manufactured an innovative suite of bespoke signage and applied graphics that reflected Springer Nature’s colour palette of red, white and blue. The signage scheme also embraced the company’s thematic focus on ‘curiosity’, incorporating artwork from a world-renowned street artist to enhance visual interest and brand storytelling throughout the space.

Key elements of the Springer Nature signage package included:

  • Corporate identity signage featuring raised 3D lettering behind the main reception desk to reinforce brand presence on arrival.

  • Suspended departmental signage designed with rare-earth magnets to securely hang from the ceiling without drilling into ceiling tiles – a practical and non-invasive solution.

  • Graffiti-inspired glass manifestations applied to exterior entrance glazing to attract visual attention from outside, paired with privacy-enhancing frosted films on interior office windows.

  • Vibrant wide-format wall graphics displaying abstract imagery across breakout areas and collaborative spaces, enhancing aesthetics and employee wellbeing.

  • Inspirational wall displays incorporating Einstein quotes and dynamic cut-out text designs to inspire and engage.

  • Clear and intuitive wayfinding signage, including floor directories, cloakroom and printer signage, and essential statutory signage for safety compliance.

A Collaborative Approach to Brand Implementation

The interior design was delivered in collaboration with BrandGuild. Antony Johnson, Creative Director, praised Signbox for their responsiveness and design expertise:

“We were keen to enlist Signbox as we had successfully worked with the team on a previous brand signage and wayfinding system that was very well received. They’re naturally collaborative and forthcoming with valuable advice and we consider them an integral part of our brand implementation team.”

One particularly challenging aspect involved installing signage on a difficult wall substrate. Signbox’s team, led by Project Manager Neil, provided a practical and visually effective solution that impressed the client.

“Neil helped us get to a solution which was practical, but also distinctive,” added Johnson. “I’ve been constantly impressed and reassured by Signbox’s performance and have already recommended them to other design colleagues.”

Bringing a Brand Vision to Life

Mark Bartlett, Managing Director at Signbox, summarised the impact of the project:

“With Springer Nature being a newly formed company, the design teams were presented with a blank canvas. Projects like this are exciting, but also incredibly important – the office environment helps set the tone for the brand’s identity at a pivotal stage. Every step, from design to installation, had to be executed with precision.

Working in close partnership with the client, ISG, Broadway Malyan, BrandGuild and other stakeholders, our team delivered a signage scheme that truly reflects the vision and values of Springer Nature. We’re proud to have played a part in creating such a dynamic and stimulating workplace.”
