99 Bishopsgate

Reception directory sign stands the test of time at 99 Bishopsgate, London

Signbox were asked to update the reception directory sign as part of the refurbishment of the prestigious office complex of 99 Bishopsgate, City of London. The developers, Hammerson PLC had the option to install a new sign system, but due to the success of the original rod directory that had been designed and installed by Signbox in 1995; they simply decided to update it.

Susan Jackson, Senior Associate at GMW Architects, who were responsible for the refurbishment at 99 Bishopsgate comments:

“We decided that the original rod directory in the reception area was a very innovative system and was still in keeping with the contemporary aspect that was chosen for the refurbishment. Therefore, the decision was made to replace the glass and graphics only. This also meant the number of slats could be reduced to simplify the information. 99 Bishopsgate has 25 office floors so it is imperative the rod directory conveyed the information in a straightforward yet effective manner.”

By reusing the rod system which was installed thirteen years ago when the building was refurbished, following a terrorist attack on Bishopsgate, proves that a good design doesn’t date. It also demonstrated that this particular signage solution which otherwise would have just been disposed of, has become sustainable because of its contemporary design flair.

The rod directory is an efficient system that clearly illustrates the importance of well designed signage that can lend itself to any type of environment. The forward thinking approach adopted by Signbox when the first rod directory was installed manifests that by investing in an innovative sign system, businesses can find a solution that is timeless, sustainable and cost effective. The contemporary design of the rod directory system has proved that it is still in keeping with modern day architecture twelve years after the original installation.
