There ain’t no mountain high enough
Eleven of the Signbox team are recovering this week after undertaking the gruelling National 3 Peaks Challenge at the weekend to raise money for charity. Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales respectively, were all scaled within 24 hours as over £7000 was collectively raised for Children with Special Needs Foundation, Southampton Hospital Charity and Phyllis Tuckwell.
The team took off from Gatwick on Saturday morning – glorious sunshine beaming through the windows – but that scene was soon replaced with gale force winds, driving rain, sleet and snow as they trekked up Ben Nevis. Impressively, the group completed the walk up and down Britain’s highest peak within six hours – but it wasn’t all downhill from there! Following a quick comfort stop to stock up on food and drink, everyone boarded the minibus for the trip south to Scafell Pike in Cumbria – an opportunity to dry off and get in a bit of a kip!
Dry weather and a starry night greeted the team as they began the walk up Scafell Pike at 01.30hrs. There was no time for respite anywhere though; only a quick photo of dawn breaking across the Lakes was allowed, as they trudged on for four hours. Physically and mentally tested by this point, the group remained united in its determination to complete the task at hand.
By 06.00hrs the team were back in the minibus once more to travel to their final peak challenge – Mount Snowdon in Wales. Greeted with blue skies and searing temperatures, everyone rehydrated, applied sunscreen, blister plasters, fresh socks and some muscle soothing gel before beginning the final leg of the journey. The timing was cut fine with just 4hrs left on the clock, but there were broad smiles all round on tired faces when, with a mere six minutes to spare, they crossed the line to complete the three peaks challenge in time.
It was a truly great experience for those involved. Despite the challenge, the team bonded and had a lot of fun whilst creating some memorable moments.
A great big thank you to those who have donated and supported the team throughout this rewarding challenge!
