Plastic Free July: How Signbox is Redefining Sustainable Signage

Every year, Plastic Free July inspires millions of people, communities and businesses around the world to be part of the solution to plastic pollution — one small change at a time. It’s a simple idea with a big impact: reduce the use of single-use plastics, rethink our habits and champion sustainable alternatives.

At Signbox, we believe that sustainability is more than a trend — it’s our responsibility as a UK manufacturer and design innovator. We know that the signs, graphics and wayfinding solutions we produce every day play a part in shaping the built environment. That’s why we’re committed to minimising our impact on the planet and leading by example.

Complete Control, Sustainable Outcomes

Unlike many signage providers, we manufacture the majority of our products in-house at our state-of-the-art facility in Egham, Surrey. This gives us complete control over every stage of production — from material selection and waste management to energy efficiency and responsible packaging.

By keeping production local and in-house, we dramatically reduce the carbon footprint associated with shipping and third-party suppliers. It also means we can trial innovative materials and processes quickly, adapt to new sustainability standards and maintain exceptional quality without compromise.

Thinking Outside the Box — All Year Round

Our talented design and manufacturing teams are constantly exploring ways to reduce or replace traditional plastics in signage. Here are some of the sustainable materials we champion every day:

  • Sustainably Sourced Woods: Natural, renewable and beautiful — responsibly harvested timbers, bamboo and birch plywood bring warmth and character to any environment. Ideal for interior wayfinding or statement pieces that age gracefully.
  • PaperStone® is a paper composite surface material made from recycled paper and a natural resin. Inherently sustainable, surprisingly tough, beautifully unique and incredibly versatile. Hard as stone yet made from paper.
  • Richlite: An innovative material made entirely from recycled paper, resin-bonded to create a strong, durable panel with a smooth, tactile feel. Perfect for clients looking for an eco-friendly alternative to traditional acrylic or composite panels.
  • Non-PVC Vinyls: Where vinyl graphics are necessary, we specify advanced non-PVC films that perform just as well but have a significantly lower environmental impact — helping clients move away from conventional plastic-based films.
  • GreenCast: A 100% recycled cast acrylic that can be itself recycled again and again.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

Reducing plastic use is just one part of our wider sustainability mission. We continually invest in efficient machinery, recycle production offcuts where possible, and design for longevity to reduce waste over a sign’s lifetime.
